Learning platform informs about inner-urban freight rail hubs

Partners from Stockholm, Berlin, Warsaw and Upper Silesia released an UrbFRail learning platform targeting urban and transport planners at developing inner-urban freight rail hubs

Within only 18 months, partners from Stockholm, Berlin, Warsaw and Upper Silesia – Zaglebie Metropolis developed tools aiming to support urban and transport planners with the development of inner-urban freight rail hubs in large metropolitan areas.

The motivation has been increasing freight traffic within the urban transport network, predominantly on roads, leading to congestions. By reviving freight-rail infrastructure for combined transport, freight should get closer to the city centres and customers, relieving urgently needed capacity on roads.

The tools developed, the UrbFrail Screening tool and the UrbFrail Development tool, have been jointly designed to identify spots potentially suitable for developing inner-urban freight rail hubs and to guide planners through different steps of the development process.

Both tools are interactive, enabling planners to provide parameters for their own region or city into the screening tool and to document relevant process steps like relevant stakeholders, availability of information and documentation needed within the developement tool.

The UrbFRail Learning Platform gathers both tools as well as further valuable information like video testimonials as well as information around combined terminals.

The project has been lead by the Berlin Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment and was financially supported by the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme 2021-2027.
