Scandria Alliance is part of the BSR Urban Mobility platform, which will equip TEN-T urban nodes and other cities with tools and best practices on sustainable, active and efficient urban mobility.
With the latest revision of the TEN-T regulation, the European Union has reinforced the role of cities in European transport policy. To better integrate the urban dimension and last mile connectivity into the TEN-T network, specific provisions and requirements have been introduced that the 431 European cities defined as urban nodes in the regulation will have to fulfil.
One of these obligations is to develop a sustainable urban mobility plan (SUMP) by 2027. Having been promoted as a strategic and integrated approach to tackle urban mobility challenges for many years already, the SUMP concept will now become obligatory for the urban nodes. This is why knowledge on sustainable urban mobility and logistics planning will be more fundamental than ever for cities, regional authorities, and policy makers.
The Interreg Baltic Sea Region (BSR) programme has now approved the new platform project BSR Urban Mobility – Enhancing active and efficient urban mobility in the Baltic Sea region.
Building on tools, guidance, and demonstrated solutions developed by different EU or nationally funded projects, the platform project aims to build cities’ and regions’ capacity to tackle urban mobility challenges, highlighting SUMPs as the cornerstone of local mobility policies.
BSR Urban Mobility will offer peer learning and capacity building initiatives for urban nodes and other cities and develop a training package on sustainable urban mobility and logistics planning. Based on transnational policy dialogue, the platform project will also translate the participating projects’ main findings into joint policy recommendations for enhancing active and efficient urban mobility in BSR cities and shaping up support mechanisms on national and EU level.
Lead by the city of Turku, representing the Union of the Baltic Cities Sustainable Cities Commission, the platform project will run from July 2025 to June 2028, with a total budget of € 1.2 M. The Scandria Alliance will be represented in the platform project’s consortium by the Joint Spatial Planning Department Berlin-Brandenburg, which will lead the governance and advocacy work of the platform project.
